Coach Northrup and middle linebacker Kevan Norris talk
over stategy against Horseheads.

After losing 8 offensive stars and
one-half of the defensive team through graduation, most experts believed
that West's Vikings would undergo a long rebuilding year. However, the
spirited Vikings led by head coach Arnold Northrup, overcame serious
injury problems and posted a fine five to three record.
In the three years Mr. Northrup has been
coach, his Vikings have amassed an excellent 18-4-2 record. Injuries to
valuable players continually plagued the club. Senior half-back Bob
Warner, who last year scored ten touchdowns, broke his arm early in the
season and was out for the remainder of the year. Hard-hitting fullback
Jesse Grover was the victim of a serious knee injury in the third game of
the season and was lost for the entire year. Junior quarterback Pudge
Brietwiese, was also beset with injuries as was senior guard Chip Wheeler.
A lesser team would have folded due to the loss of such valuable players,
but the Vikings always had able substitutes to take their places.
The team was not without its stars. Dan Gulliver,
Howard Green, Van Welty, and Darrell Leibson were named to the STL
All-Star team. Leibson won the "lineman of the year" award in
the STL., and Green was runner-up in the Corning Lions Club "lineman
of the year" award between East and West exclusively.
