In years Past, the words West High and basketball were anything but synonymous, but watch out for the rejuvenated Vikings in the future. The "New look" Vikings have posted an excellent 9-2 record to date and are in second place in the Sullivan Trail League. The Chiaramonte-led Vikings are a young team with only one Senior, John Chalker, in the starting line-up. With eight veterans returning next year, West should be practically unstoppable.
One of the most instrumental factors in our team's success is the feeling of team pride and unity. His year's Vikings are a TEAM.
Our season has been a season of firsts in Viking history. In the firs game of the season we broke the school scoring record scoring 90 points against Elmira Heights. During Christmas vacation, while other students were taking it easy, the Vikings spent every afternoon in the gym preparing for the Viking Invitational. This hard work paid off in dividends as West took first place, downing a tough Wellsville club in the first round and then squeaking past a very surprising Romulus ball club. Romulus placed second, Wellsville third and East, loser of both games, placed last.
The third first in Viking history is that this year's team has an excellent chance of making it to the sectionals. Even if they don't go in a Steuben County Champs, they have an excellent chance of going as an at-large team. No basketball team in West history has won more than 12 games in a season, much less get the chance for a sectional appearance.
Mr. Big On this year's team is Steve Retterer, 6"4" junior center. Steve is second in STL scoring, carrying an average of better than twenty points a game. There is, however, an excellent supporting cast. Juniors Pudge Breitwise and Jeff Kenyon do an excellent job as guards, and both are capable of scoring big on any given night. The forwards are steady John Chalker and high scoring Sophomore Bob Rossi.
The- only Seniors on the club are John Chalker, Chris Caulkinns, Howard Green, Ron Hill and Larry Lyon. With eight veterans coming back, West is going to be tough on everyone the future.

Super-Soph, Mike Pieri slips by Romulus defenders for two points.
